The Exercise Mistake Most Women Over 40 Are Making

One of the most common frustrations I hear from women is:

“I exercise regularly, so why is my body still changing?”

They’re trying.

Walking.

Doing classes.

Making an effort.

And yet their body seems to be moving in the opposite direction to where they’d like it to go.

For many women, this can feel confusing.

Even discouraging.

But the issue often isn’t a lack of effort.

It’s understanding what the body needs most during this stage of life.

And for many women, that conversation starts with muscle.

Signs This Might Be You

 Exercising regularly

 Losing strength

 Feeling softer

 Scales creeping up

 Clothes fitting differently

More tired than you used to be

What The Research Shows

  • Muscle naturally declines with age
  • Resistance training improves body composition
  • Muscle improves insulin sensitivity
  • Strength training supports longevity
  • Protein and strength training work together

Why This Matters after 40

  • Muscle becomes easier to lose
  • Metabolism changes
  • Strength supports independence
  • Blood sugar regulation becomes more important
  • Healthy ageing becomes increasingly important

What You Can Do This Week

  1. Strength train 2–3 times per week
  2. Prioritise protein
  3. Focus on progressive overload
  4. Track strength gains
  5. Walk daily
